Blog #10
Overall, I have had a great time working for this family, and I've learned a lot. I've also learned that social media can play a huge role in this small business to make sure that people in our are know that Almaroad Properties exists.
From a PR standpoint, it is easy to see how a business like this could fly under the radar compared to larger agencies. Our job from a social media and public relations view is to get the word out. To let people know that the quality of the job is no less great than that of a larger company.
One of my favorite aspects of this business, once again, is the fact that two home businesses can overlap each other. If a person comes to Almaroad Properties looking to buy a home and don't find the perfect fit, Sam can meet with them to discuss the topic of building their own home. I have seen that happen, and think that it gives the Almaroad family a one-up on the competition.
I enjoyed talking to my bosses about their business, what is great about it, and what can be improved from a public relations and social media standpoint.

A little over a year ago, tragedy struck the Almaroad family. Missy and Duff, Sam and Celia's daughter and son in law, found out that their 1 year old son had a rare form of eye cancer.
His name is Thompson, and he was born blind in one eye. His "good" eye now has cancerous tumors behind it, and has the potential to go completely blind too.
Missy and Duff Wagoner had some hard decisions to make. They chose to take Thompson to St. Jude for treatment. That became their second home, and a year later, Thompson is doing great! He received chemotherapy, and lots of laser treatments. As of now, his tumors have shrunk in size and the cancer is under control.
During that time, the office was empty a lot. Sam, Celia, and Duff were busy taking care of the family in that difficult time. I was here a lot and worked some extra hours to help "hold down the fort". During that awful period, I saw what beautiful people this family really were. Their faith in God is unreal, and creates a light that shines into others. I learned that blessings can come from every situation.

Being a PR major has really made me view this business from a different perspective. My boss, Celia, has told me in the past that one of the hardest obstacles is changing the public's perception of "bigger is better".
Almaroad Properties used to be partnered with Century 21, so the name was "Century 21 Almaroad Properties". Just over a year before I was hired, Almaroad Properties split from Century 21, and become their own independent business. I am not sure exactly why the decision was made, but it was obvious to me that their time partnered with Century 21 wasn't very pleasant. In the end, bigger isn't always better!

Before this job, I knew virtually nothing about the real estate world. I have already learned so much, and I've grown up more as a person by running simple errands and doing simple tasks that a lot of people my age do not yet have to do. In college, the best job most kids can get is working at a restaurant or store, and I'm so thankful to have this kind of opportunity. Family owned businesses care about the person! My bosses understand that I am a student first, and they let me off work anytime I need it with no questions asked. That is something that I will never take for granted.

Our office at Almaroad Properties is relatively small, so we have recently changed things up a bit. A few of our agents are "part time", meaning they have a full time job that isn't with our agency. They are still great realtors, they just come in the office when they're meeting with a client or listing a house. Two of our agents, Pamela Johnson and Susan Jones, share one office. That sounds cramped, but it really works out well! They have their own belongings, and pop in and out when they have work to do!
We recently gained two new agents, who both have just passed their real estate test! They also share one office together, since both of them do have other jobs.
It is very cool to see how versatile and flexible this profession can be!

At Almaroad Properties, we currently have 7 realtors. One of the realtors, Duff Wagoner, is actually the son in law of Sam Almaroad. Duff has been a real estate agent for almost 10 years, and he loves what he does! He also manages many houses and apartments, so he stays very busy.
From watching Duff work, I have learned that it definitely takes a "people person" to have a job like his. He is constantly dealing with different problems that people have with renting their homes or apartments, all while helping people buy and list homes! It is definitely a job for an energetic person!

At work, I am considered a receptionist. I have my own desk, computer, phone and more, but that is not the extent of my job. I am really similar to a personal assistant. I help realtors with files or copies that need to be made, I purchase office supplies and keep track of what is needed weekly, I set up every listing and contract file, I create new files for listings, I post all real estate ads to social media, and I also pay all company bills and make bank deposits! Some days are calm and some days are crazy, but every day brings something new and that is exciting!
